5 November 2026. The final day of Smart City Expo World Congress and Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress highlights an important conclusion: the future of cities depends not only on technology, but also on the ability of public authorities to turn innovation into practical solutions for citizens.

At the Housing World Summit, Claudio Orrego, Governor of the Santiago Metropolitan Region, and Bruce Katz, Senior Advisor to the National Housing Crisis Task Force, discussed metropolitan housing strategies at a time when housing challenges increasingly extend beyond traditional city boundaries.

Artificial intelligence and urban digitalisation featured prominently across the exhibition. Google showcased solutions for urban data analysis and traffic management, while Madrid highlighted digital transformation and economic development initiatives. In Las Rozas, monitoring technologies combine information on traffic, parking, air quality and pedestrian mobility.

International perspectives also came from Asia. South Korea presented integrated digital mobility platforms, while Japan focused on the human experience in urban design. The Czech Pavilion further illustrated the growing international competition to develop smarter urban solutions.

A particularly relevant topic for the environmental industry was the circular battery economy. At Tomorrow.Mobility, Traian Urban (EIT Urban Mobility), Oliver Fernandez Campos (Recyclus) and Robin Zalwer (TÜV Rheinland) participated in a session dedicated to moving from a linear model towards a circular battery economy.

Critical raw material recovery, recycling, resource reuse and reducing industrial dependencies are becoming essential components of electric mobility.

For Romania, the developments presented in Barcelona raise a fundamental question: how prepared are our public authorities and companies to move from strategies and pilot projects to large-scale implementation?

InfoMediu Europa followed the discussions and technological solutions presented at both events, focusing on opportunities for public administration, municipal services and Romania's environmental industry.

The cities of tomorrow will not be built through technology alone. They will require vision, investment and bold decisions.
